Welcome to the Peru project blog

Welcome to the UCSB Chapter of Engineers Without Borders PERU project blog!

This blog is a resource for project teams, interested UCSB students, professional mentors, and family/friends of Peru project team members. The project team can post their thoughts about their specific projects in Peru and their experience with the community. UCSB students can read about our on-going projects and get involved! Our team is always looking for UCSB students who are interested in applying their technical skills and personal motivation to assist in providing long term engineering solutions to communities in developing countries. This is a great opportunity for students to apply their theoretical school work to real-world engineering applications.

Our mission is to support community-driven development projects through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while fostering responsible student leadership. The 2008-2009 project team includes students from mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering, physics, and environmental science and management. We welcome students with all backgrounds to come and check out our group.

Araypallpa, Peru is a rural community of approximately 300 indigenous subsistence farmers in the Andean highlands. In July of 2009, the project team will travel to Araypallpa, Peru to follow up and monitoring of previously implemented engineering projects, perform water quality testing, host continued educational workshops, perform a basline health assessment, and spend time with community members to better understand their way of life. The health assessment will be performed by two medical students from Baylor University in Texas. EWB-UCSB has been partnering with Araypallpa since 2004.

The project team will also be traveling to the nearby community of Sanka to present a feasibility study for the construction of a health clinic, perform water quality testing, host educational workshops, perform a basline health assessment, and facilitate discussions between community members to identify their needs. The health assessment will be performed by two medical students from Baylor University in Texas. EWB-UCSB has been partnering with the community since 2007.

Please do not hesitate to post your thoughts, questions, ideas, adivce, etc to this blog. That is what it's here for!

Cheers,

Adam Kanold
